WWI Masterclass conducted by veteran director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali with 600 students followed by an interactive Q&A session. Students were thrilled to hear Sanjay Leela Bhansali talk straight from his heart on why and how his fascination for bright colours, melodious music, dramatic visuals & sounds grew from his personal life experiences.
Starting the Masterclass, Mr. Bhansali appreciated the magnum scale of WWI and its perfect philosophy of world-class education for the coming generations.
Talking about vibrant colours in his movies, he candidly shared his influence & desire from his past. He also added that for him, “colours bind the narrative. Colours impact audience visually & psychologically. Everybody can relate to the beauty of colours.”
He also revealed that he is a huge fan of legendary filmmaker, Late V. Shantaram. He said, films of V. Shantaram and Ritwick Ghatak had inspired him to take up direction. Talking about influence and inspiration, he mentioned that sounds and music as used in Subhash Ghai’s films inspire him. He opined that ‘Catharsis’ is core to Art ~ “My angst motivates me to tell a story, to make a film.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali also shared insight into the kind of relationship that Directors should have with Actors and viceversa. He, very wisely, mentioned that directors should always strike a cordial relation with the actors. The actors should be always kept in sync with the vision of the director to help them deliver the best to their abilities. ‘It is extremely important for an actor to relate to the character’, said Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
At the Masterclass, Mr. Bhansali said, that aspiring filmmakers should watch classics from acclaimed directors from across the world. “Watching Films is one of the most important exercise that an aspiring filmmaker should practice.”
He ended the session by saying, ‘Believe in what you want to do and be ready for struggle & rejection. Never give up. Be at it.’
