There are many connecting themes in American Beauty. Through plot, characterization and cinematography these themes are conveyed well. American Beauty reminds us that, like Lester, we really have no idea what we really want. Lester Burnham, a depressed suburban father in a mid-life crisis, decides to turn his hectic life around after developing an infatuation for his daughter’s attractive friend.
The message to love life and live honestly to yourself and others is shown. All of the characters are searching for a way to connect or to feel happy once again and in harmony. The joy, love and passion for others and life in general is what this movie conveys through its dialogue, actions, framing and technique. It shows that we sometimes confuse beauty with ugliness and completely miss the beauty altogether.
American Beauty is a movie that will leave many questions in your mind which cannot be answered! The best film of 1999, the best film of its decade, American Beauty stands tall as the best film ever made.
